Young professionals look for a fast track to the top

Chris Davis

The expectations of those joining the accounting industry is changing, prompting employers, such as PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), to find ways to accommodate their aspirations.

'Compared with 20 years ago, young people joining the industry are looking for a fast way to learn and grow. They have multiple expectations of what work should involve. They also look for flexibility and lots of variety,' says Nora Wu, human capital partner at PwC China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.

Wu, who is also PwC China Shanghai office lead partner, says the main focus of the previous generation was job security and a good work environment. They were also inclined to be more committed and loyal.

Adapting to changing needs, Wu says the 'PwC Experience' incorporates cross-generation relationship-building based on sharing and collaboration.

'Through listening and sharing, we can put ourselves in each other's shoes so we can understand different points of view and aspirations,' she says.

Wu says the Career Expo is a good platform for mutual learning, where young people can voice their aspirations and employers can explain what they can offer.

'Taking part is a good way to listen and learn so we can innovate ways to ensure we provide the right training, development and career opportunities,' she says.
