Records are made to be broken. Usually it comes down to a matter of 'when' rather than 'can'. But an obscure set of records accomplished by a team of women weightlifters in South Korea may very well stand the test of time.

What happened at the National Sports Festival in 2000 was astonishing. Out of a possible 15 gold medals, one team of women weightlifters won 14 gold medals and a silver.

The Korean film, Lifting King Kong, is based on the true story of these remarkable women, who overcame many obstacles to achieve sporting glory.

Lee Ji-bong (Lee Beom-soo), a bronze medallist at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, becomes a weightlifting coach at a high school in a small rural village.

He comes across six young budding weightlifters: Young-ja (Jo An), Hyun-jung (Jeon Bo-mi), Soo-ok (Lee Seul-bi), Yeo-soon (Choi Moon-kyeong), Bo-young (Kim Min-young) and Min-hee (Lee Yoon-hee). He believes they all have the talent to succeed at the highest level.

Yet Lee's dedication goes beyond the usual confines of a coach. He takes the girls under his wing; Lee trains them hard and gives them emotional support to help them prepare both for competition and life outside the sport.
