The vibe: Wyndham Street's latest offering is the intimate wine bar California Vintage, the first branch of 20 set to open across Asia. The decor is space age meets minimalist California rustic. Wine dispensers lining the interior surround high raw wooden tables with brown leather seats (right). There's a seasonal pairing menu inspired by the Golden State, with such dishes as California tacos with Baja fish (HK$72, pair with sparkling and light, crisp white wines), San Francisco cioppino (HK$140, pair with rose and lighter reds) and Santa Maria BBQ beef tri-tip with baked pinquito beans (HK$78, pair with full-bodied reds).
The drinks: the bar has partnered with 22 wineries, offering more than 80 wines from around California. The wines are divided into eight categories, beginning with sparkling and light, crisp wines, and culminating with bold tannic reds. Each vintage is available by half glass, full glass and bottle.
The white proprietary blend 2009 Venge 'Champ des Fleurs', from Napa, is a flavourful fruity wine (full glass HK$97). From the same vineyard, the cabernet sauvignon 2008 Venge 'Silencieux' is a delightful full-bodied red (HK$150). The pinot noir 2007 Fritz Reserve, from Russian River (HK$140), satisfies any thirst for a red. There are so many wines on offer you're bound to find some corkers.
The verdict: wine enthusiasts seeking a taste of California will be pleased. California Vintage is a great place to go on a sunny afternoon to enjoy wine and hazy conversation with a friend.
