With Social Media Week Hong Kong kicking off and, coincidentally, Facebook opening a local office, this is shaping up to be an eventful week for social media. Yahoo is trying not to get left in the dust, with a redesign and new product.

First, the Web giant invited local artist B.Wing (real name Bien Yip Wing) to redesign the header for Yahoo's e-mail services, YMail. Then, to truly appeal to Hongkongers, Yahoo unveiled its own mahjong set - a real, not a virtual one - with the company's logo carved into the bonus tiles and coming packaged in a shiny steel box.

Alfred Tsoi, vice-president of Yahoo Hong Kong, said about the set: 'We always want to take creative approaches to marketing and we think we've hit the sweet spot this year. Mahjong is a traditional game ... and I think this set shows Yahoo values local traditions with a human touch.'
