25,000 elderly may have deadly abdominal disease

More than 25,000 Hongkongers aged 60 or above may have a deadly disease in which the main artery of the abdomen becomes enlarged, a Chinese University study suggests. Abdominal aortic aneurysm has no obvious symptoms, but when the artery bursts, 60 to 90 per cent of patients die within a week. Research found 3.44 per cent of men and 0.86 per cent of women in the age group have the condition. Doctors urge regular medical check-ups for elderly people.
