THERE are scarves and scarves. And then there is Hermes. That's what we were led to believe at the Garden Court of Pacific Place yesterday when the legendary Parisian neckwear company launched an exhibition - ''A Scarf is Born''.
As the guests sipped champagne and cast their eyes over the 150 Hermes scarfs on display, two craftsmen from the factory in Lyons were set up in one corner showing its birth - from plain silk to finished designer accoutrement.
Simon Benian, managing director of Hermes Hong Kong, told us that since the company was started in 1939 ''we've put out the scarf in 900 different designs''.
cw-1 How careless then for two of our socialite friends to turn up wearing the same scarf.
French Consul-General Laurent Aublin, who opened the exhibition which is on until May 15 as part of Le French May , looked worried as he surveyed the colourful designs. ''My wife is rather partial to Hermes,'' he whispered to Keeping Posted.
Naturally, the Hermes scarf was much to the fore among the smart-set - although not necessarily worn in the traditional manner.
