A knees-up for those with music in the blood and poetry in the soul
There is a saying that to be born in Wales means to have music in your blood and poetry in your soul, and all this will be celebrated at the St David's Society of Hong Kong's Centenary Ball on February 26 at Hong Kong Football Club.
The first recorded gathering of note to celebrate St David's Day was the banquet of March 1, 1911, held at the Hong Kong Hotel in Kowloon. The society has a record of all its presidents since that time and has kept going, even through the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong.
Of course, a get-together like this would not be complete without a healthy dose of music and song. This will be provided by Welsh soprano Gwawr Edwards (pictured). The singer has been compared to another famous Welsh soprano, Katherine Jenkins, and has just released her new self-titled solo album, which includes collaborations with world acclaimed harpist Catrin Finch and opera star Bryn Terfel. The society's sister organisation, the Hong Kong Welsh Male Voice Choir, will also be performing.
'It promises to be a memorable night for everyone,' president of the St David's Society of Hong Kong, Gareth Thomas, said. 'The society is also a charitable organisation - we are supporting Enlighten for Epilepsy in Hong Kong and a Cardiff University medical research project this year.'
