The Development Bureau says it has found 1,100 old buildings containing asbestos during Operation Building Bright, a HK$2.5 billion publicly funded maintenance programme. Asbestos is a toxic material banned in construction in 1996. Officials who inspected sites found no contractors had violated regulations during removal of asbestos, which can cause lung cancer.
