Don't forget the poor among us
I refer to the editorial 'Bankers lend a hand to good cause' (South China Morning Post, December 6). Everyone knows Hong Kong is a well-off city. But this is only on the surface. Many surveys show the number of poor families is rising fast. I was happy to learn that bankers had helped some of Hong Kong's disadvantaged people.
We seldom hear about bankers who are active in charity. Those bankers are good role models.
It is important for the rich to be part of the community. The wide gap between the rich and the poor is a reason for concern.
People with little education find it hard to get a good job. They work hard in restaurants or on construction sites, but barely make ends meet. We need to think how we can help them better.
Meanwhile, some companies are making big profits. They should take on part of the responsibility to help the poor. For example, they could hire more people for low-level jobs.
