Yiu eyes KrisFlyer Sprint for champion Sacred Kingdom
Top sprinter Sacred Kingdom was missing from entries for the third leg of the Hong Kong Speed Series yesterday, the HK$6 million Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (1,400m), with trainer Ricky Yiu Poon-fai eyeing another overseas mission.
The 12 nominations for the Queen's Silver Jubilee are headed by Beauty Flash and Lucky Nine, with Yiu highlighting the distance as a turn off for connections of Sacred Kingdom.
'He only tried 1,400m once in his career and that was a couple of years ago when Good Ba Ba beat him in this race and he was unlucky,' Yiu said. 'But I don't think that we would go there again at this stage of his career. He will stay at the shorter races at 1,000m and 1,200m.'
That would limit the gelding to one more domestic race - the Group Two Sprint Cup on May 1 - but Yiu has another Group One option left in Singapore's KrisFlyer Sprint on May 20, a race he won two years ago. 'He came through his last run really well, he's having a couple of weeks' break, then we'll bring him back up for the KrisFlyer,' Yiu said.
Sacred Kingdom will bump into local champion Rocket Man at Kranji, but the Singapore flier also stands in his way for the Golden Shaheen in Dubai on March 26. With JJ The Jet Plane a dismal flop in Dubai last Thursday night on Tapeta, there must be some doubt about him even running in the Golden Shaheen against Dynamic Blitz, but Rocket Man is still scheduled to go there after a preparation run in Singapore on March 6.
Yiu and jockey Olivier Doleuze will travel to Dubai on March 7 to give Dynamic Blitz 'a really good gallop', but the trainer reports all has been perfect with the gelding since his Group Three win two weeks ago.
