Trapped deer rescued

A small deer was trapped between the iron bars of a railing in Ma On Shan on Monday night. It was freed by firemen and is under the care of animal experts.

The Indian muntjac was trapped on Nin Fung Road near a rubbish collection station. The 1-metre-long animal had to be rescued by firemen. The firemen had to cut the iron bars.

The animal was then handed over to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

An SPCA spokeswoman said that after a veterinarian examined the deer, it was sent to the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden in Tai Po. Hopefully, it will get better there and will be released back to the wild.

The Indian muntjac is a common deer species in South Asia. It has soft brownish fur, often with creamy markings. It is also known as the 'barking deer' because of its loud sharp calls that sound like the barks of dogs.
