The fight against slavery continues
'I'm not for sale' was the motto that 12 students from Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong have been spreading during a week-long visit to Singapore to raise awareness about human trafficking and modern-day slavery.
The students were in the Lion City to meet individuals and groups concerned about the issue. They were also there to promote the 24-Hour Race Against Trafficking. The event was held successfully in Hong Kong on December 3 last year and is being planned for Singapore.
Over the past year, the Hong Kong students have been working with the Stop the Traffik movement, a global coalition of groups opposed to human trafficking.
Due to the severity of the problem in Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia, the students identified Singapore is an ideal place to raise awareness on the issue.
The group is seeking the support of students and corporations to hold Singapore's 24-Hour Race in the coming December. They hope to repeat the success of the Hong Kong race held on The Peak. The Hong Kong race attracted more than 150 secondary school students from eight schools.
The 19 teams that took part in the event raised about HK$300,000 for the Esther Benjamins Trust, a British-based charity that provides care and support for child victims of trafficking in Nepal.
