Hong Kong mother's joy at birth of boy in devastated city
For a Hong Kong mother caught up in the disaster-struck Japanese city of Sendai, the arrival of a baby boy is a ray of hope amid the devastated landscape.
Frances Ku Ying-hung, a missionary who is married to Japanese pastor Takahiro Ami, gave birth early yesterday.
The baby was originally due on March 10, a day before Sendai and surrounding areas were struck by a powerful earthquake, which generated a destructive tsunami.
She finally gave birth via Caesarean section five days later in a Sendai hospital, according to Thomas Fok, Ku's colleague and general secretary of One Circle, a local evangelical organisation.
The baby, who was named Renma, was healthy, Fok said.
Ku was sent by the organisation to Japan, where she met and married Ami.
'It was a double blessing for Frances, as her parents travelled especially to Japan to witness the baby's birth,' Fok said.
He said Ku's parents would leave Sendai with the Chinese consulate to a safer place, but he was not sure if the couple would return to Hong Kong soon.
'Frances needs some time to recover, after giving birth via Caesarean section.
'The couple also needs time to obtain a birth certificate and the other documents for their child,' Fok said.
Over the weekend, as Ku waited for the delivery of the baby, more than 360 people joined a Facebook page and offered support to the couple.
