Post takes 11 prizes at 2010 news awards
The South China Morning Post has won 11 prizes in the 2010 Hong Kong News Awards.
The Post scooped the prize pool last night in the Best Business News Writing (English category) for the second year in a row, took the top prize in Best News Writing (English category), was second runner-up in the Best Scoop and took second prize in the best science news reporting category.
The newspaper also gained five awards in the photographic category, including champion for news photos.
Acting editor-in-chief Cliff Buddle said: 'Our strong showing in these awards is a credit to the skill and dedication of our team in a variety of different fields. We will continue to strive for the highest standards.'
Post reporters won all three prizes in the best English business news writing category, with the top honour going to Eric Ng for his package on the excessive greenhouse gases produced by mainland factories to earn carbon credits and the EU's ban on buying such credits.
Naomi Rovnick's piece on how Dairy Farm's expansion dreams turned sour earned her second prize and second runner-up honours went to Denise Tsang's report on how mainland workers used collective bargaining in negotiating their wages with bosses.
The winner for best English news writing went to Irene Jay Liu for her feature on the chronology of the Manila hostage crisis, tracing the events leading up to when sacked police officer Rolando Mendoza killed eight Hong Kong hostages after he hijacked a tour bus in August last year.
Cheung Chi-fai and Joyce Ng came third in the best scoop for revealing how businessman Simon Lo Lin-shing planned to build a private lodge on pristine Sai Wan beach in Sai Kung, while Fiona Tam's series on a Beijing Genomics Institute study on the genetic differences between prodigies and average children earned her a second in best science news reporting.
The newspaper saw its team of photographers sweep up five awards this year, with Sam Tsang earning two - the top award in news photography for a close-up of a woman's tear during a memorial service for Manila's hostage crisis victims and second runner-up in feature photography for an image of competitors flying off into Victoria Harbour in their self-made dragon craft in last year's Red Bull Flugtag.
Felix Wong also won two awards, a second runner-up in news photography and a first runner-up in the features category for his shots on the mass cremation of victims after last year's 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Qinghai , and an art piece in Sotheby's auction respectively. Edward Wong won a merit in features photography for an image showing legislators enjoying music in a studio.
