Mamoz

The vibe: Mamoz occupies roughly 5,000 sq ft in Cubus, a newly opened building in Causeway Bay that's just steps away from Lee Gardens. The venue has a panoramic view of the area, as well as glimpses of Victoria Harbour. You can forget the crowds milling about on street level while you sit in a comfy leather armchair, snacking on a bowl of cashews. Music plays at the perfect level for conversation, but is loud enough to keep voices from carrying between tables.

The drinks: the bartender refines the art of the cocktail at the eight-metre-long bar at the heart of the 28th floor. The Southside Fizz (HK$88), a combination of Tanqueray No. Ten, fresh lime, mint and soda, is a refreshing drink from Hugo Ensslin's Recipes for Mixed Drinks (1917). The Gold Rush (HK$88), based on a recipe from New York bar Milk and Honey, features Woodford Reserve, honey and fresh lemon. If nothing on the extensive cocktail menu tickles your fancy, you can opt for the 'dealer's choice' and let the bartender whip up something special. There is also a sizable wine list, as well as beers on tap. A snack menu has various bar favourites, such as fried fish and chips (HK$78) plus smoked salmon and corn quesadillas (HK$78).

The verdict: Mamoz is an ideal place to enjoy a well-crafted cocktail, and its Causeway Bay location offers a welcome escape from the SoHo and LKF scene.
