Rush to buy Japanese baby formula
Parents in Hong Kong are flocking to buy Japanese milk formula, worried that future batches may be contaminated with radiation. All stocks were sold out within a few hours at a Japanese baby food store in Prince Edward on Monday.
Bonjour Cosmetics, which imports Japanese milk formula, saw sales soar over the weekend. More than 40,000 cans were sold between last Friday and Sunday.
But Secretary for Food and Health Dr York Chow Yat-ngok urged prudence yesterday. He said that most imported milk formula is from Hokkaido, a city not affected by the radiation so far. Meanwhile, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines are checking fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood from Japan for nuclear material.
