Minimum wage law

Hong Kong's largest employer group, the Employers Federation of Hong Kong, told its members yesterday that there are no requirements under the minimum wage law for workers to be paid for rest days and meal breaks.

The law comes into force on May 1. It requires all employees be paid at least HK$28 an hour.

That wage was proposed last year, using figures from the second season in 2009. The law will be reviewed every two years to see if any adjustments, whether they be increases or decreases, should be made.

The Labour and Welfare Bureau said earlier that employers should reach an agreement with their employees as to whether or not they are paid for meal breaks and rest days.
