Latin tunes sound a perfect fit for the stadium sing-along

Many years ago, Mick Jagger was in the stadium and no doubt singing Start Me Up as it blared over the public address. The Sevens songs are part of what resonates each year, part of what we take away, apart from memories, new rugby shirts, souvenirs and photos.

Sure there are the timeless classics but each year there's something new, too. And Mexico's Hong Kong debut offers a great new theme.

There are at least a dozen songs titled Mexico sung by artists from Jimmy Buffett to James Taylor and Elvis. As for songs inspired by the country, Buffett's Wasting away in Margaritaville and the ubiquitous party tune, Tequila are among the standouts. Not to forget the 1980s hit by Wall of Voodoo, Mexican Radio, and the Eagles' Tequila Sunrise.

Surely some advertiser will take up the Latin American beat of Yolanda Be Cool's We No Speak Americano. With over 40 million hits on YouTube, why not spread the sound wider in the stadium? The Australian band's hit has topped the charts throughout Europe and made a splash in Mexico. 'I am looking forward to the sounds of the Sevens,' says one fan. 'In preparation, I have on my iPod on a permanent loop, Mexican Divorce by Burt Bacharach but sung by Ry Cooder and Down Mexico Way, a Gene Autry song but performed by Chris Isaak.'

Some songs like Sweet Caroline and Who Let the Dogs Out? are permanent fixtures. Says tournament operations director Rod Mason: 'As has become a tradition, I will ensure Sweet Caroline goes out at the end of the march past before the start of the semi-finals, at 13:57:45 to be precise!'

Why does Caroline work? 'It has a chorus that 40,000 can join in on; and the classic line 'Good times never seemed so good - I feel inclined, to believe they never would' I think that sums up the party,' Mason says.
