Former All Black Justin Marshall did a lot of distributing as a world-class scrumhalf but he was delighted to see someone else doing the giving in the form of a surprising donation this week.

In town to play for the BGC Barbarians in the Tens, Marshall was exhilarated to see the US$100,000 contribution from BGC to the New Zealand quake relief.

'This is a fantastic gesture by BGC. As someone who lives in Christchurch and has experienced the impact first hand, I know this will be gratefully received by the relief effort and the people whose lives have been affected,' Marshall (pictured) said. BGC Partners is a Nasdaq-listed brokerage firm that spun out of the Cantor Fitzgerald partnership. They have picked up the ball of benevolence around the 17 countries where they operate.

Cantor Fitzgerald was situated in the Twin Towers during 9/11 and lost 658 staff. The brokerage firm gave 25 per cent of the partnership profits for five years to the families of the staff who died in the 9/11 events.

In the wake of the Japan earthquake and tsunami, the company donated 100 per cent of the Tokyo office's revenues, along with 25 per cent of the revenues from other Asia-Pacific offices, for one week to relief agencies in Japan.

BGC's US$100,000 cheque for the New Zealand government's Christchurch Earthquake Appeal was presented on Thursday at Sevva in Princes Building at a function held in conjunction with the final of the Hong Kong Football Club Tens tournament.

BGC was the title sponsor of the Asia Pacific Barbarians team who were narrowly beaten in the Tens final on Thursday night.

Former All Black captain Sean Fitzpatrick, president of the Asia Pacific Barbarians, presented a cheque on behalf of BGC to Adele Bryant, New Zealand consul-general.
