Taking heart from landmark try, Mexico turn attention to weaker end of spectrum

Mexico may have lost both their pool games yesterday, going down 40-7 to Scotland and 41-0 to Tonga, but they did create a little bit of history with their first try at So Kon Po.

Christian Henning was the man who wrote his name in the fairly slim Mexico rugby record books, pouncing on a clever diagonal kick to go over the line and spark huge cheers and prompt the strains of La Cucaracha from the DJ. However Mexico fare today, it was a memory he will cherish forever.

'It felt amazing,' said Henning, a student of medicine in British Columbia. 'I wasn't expecting it. All our families, all the Mexican rugby community, are following us on a link we posted on the internet and it's a great memory for Mexicans too.

'For me, it's the peak of my career - and I'm still 20, I'm not sure if I'm going to be here in one or two years or five years. I have a scholarship to play rugby in Canada and I'm still relying on medicine - I can't expect much from rugby right now!'

Despite being pleased just to take part, Mexico were disappointed not to get a result in pool C and aim to put that right today.

'We've just got to get focused, if we can get the basics right we'll get the rest of the game right,' said Henning. 'We've got a lot of things to work on, we've got to talk in the hotel and make a plan and get things straight. But teams [today] aren't going to be as hard. We're expecting to win a match, that's our goal and I think we can achieve it.'
