Exco member condemns 'heartless' bosses

Exco member Cheng Yiu-tong says employers who avoid paying workers for their meal hours should be condemned. 'They are using every means to exploit employees. Citizens find this heartless,' he said. Cheng, president of the Federation of Trade Unions, urged the government yesterday to legislate to protect workers' rights. The Labour and Welfare Bureau is to release guidelines for employers today on the minimum wage law that takes effect on May 1. On Tuesday, the Employers' Federation reminded its members hourly paid workers need not be paid for rest days and meal breaks under the new law.
