Executive suites get a case of the blues
with Robby Nimmo
Riding the escalators to the stadium's upper decks is the stairway to heaven, or in this case, Sevens heaven.
It is in these corridors of power the companies express their true colours every year, at least in their choices of theming and branding.
While Swire, Jardines and Sun Hung Kai properties opted for understated logos on grey doors, some firms went to more extravagant lengths, a surprising number of them preferring blue.
Over at Deutsche Bank's box, they went full on with a Siberian theme, handing out blue Cossack vests and hats. In the chilly weather, those gifts were welcome.
Blue dominated the scene in the boxes of Hong Kong team sponsors UBS, Deloitte and RBS, where the colours of their logos were prominent.
Down the corridor the sky was blue at Goldman Sachs. Guests were metaphorically transported to New Zealand with a mural of a clear blue sky with snow-capped mountains.
'We had the New Zealand theme planned because of the Rugby World Cup there this year,' said Goldman's Ryan Holsheimer.
'Once the earthquake happened, we deliberated a lot about whether it was the right thing to do and decided to stick with it. Goldman's staff got behind fundraising and raised nearly US$1 million for the New Zealand Red Cross.'
