Kowloon Junior School says goodbye to old grounds

Teachers and students of ESF Kowloon Junior School say goodbye their home of 60 years at Perth Street, Ho Man Tin, after the Easter holidays.

But the departure will not last long as a new school will be built on the original site by 2013.

Until then everyone will be in Hung Hom at a temporary school. The new campus is estimated to cost HK$423 million.

Opened in 1902, it is one of the biggest primary schools under the English Schools Foundation. The six grades are split between two campuses on Perth Street and Rose Street. The new campus will house all 900 students in one location.

Year One pupil Yashvi Sadarangani said: 'I'm excited about the new campus because the entire school will be reunited.'

On March 24, students, alumni and staff got together for a series of events to say farewell to the old school.

Teachers and pupils shared their memories and thoughts through art and poetry readings about the old and the new.

Year Six pupil Ashwin Mahtani is leaving Kowloon Junior School for nearby King George V School but is happy about the new campus.

'I'll be going to KGV which is just next to the new school building. But I can always come back to visit.'
