Donations for Japan hit HK$85m

Hongkongers' donations to victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami jumped by half in just a week to about HK$85 million.

So far, the Red Cross has received HK$39 million, World Vision Hong Kong HK$32 million, the Salvation Army HK$13 million and Unicef HK$1 million.

World Vision Hong Kong says schools have been making generous donations and organising fund-raising campaigns in school.

The agency and Unicef have set up child-friendly centres in Japan where children and their families can gather and receive counselling.

Unicef is distributing to kits to children. The kits contain frisbees, footballs and other items to help them recover from their shocking experience by taking part in recreational activities. It is also distributing school kits with stationery and basic learning materials so students will catch up quickly when school resumes.
