LEGISLATORS yesterday rejected a proposal to double to $60,000 the election expenses for September's district board poll, saying this would prevent the less well-off from taking part.

United Democrat legislators told the Constitutional Development Panel the party would consider tabling an amendment to the Corrupt and Illegal Practices Ordinance, which stipulates the amount of election expenses, if the Government failed to consider its views.

The hefty increase was approved by the Executive Council on May 10 and is set to be gazetted on Friday.
