Lauda Air

Why you can trust SCMP

THREE years after the Lauda Air crash in Thailand claimed the lives of 223 people - 52 of them from Hong Kong - the cause of the accident remains unknown.

Flight NG004, which originated in Hong Kong, crashed shortly after takeoff from Bangkok three years ago today. It has never been established why the left-hand engine of the twin-engined Boeing 767-300ER went into reverse thrust.

Other questions also remain unanswered. Why, for instance, was one of the indestructible black boxes apparently destroyed by the impact and fire, while the other remained perfectly intact? Why was a transcript of the final cockpit crew conversation released by the Thai authorities which did not tie in with the timing of the crash?
