McEnroe hits ace for art

ART-STRUCK tennis star John McEnroe, currently a broadcaster at the French Open, has donated US$183,000 (HK$1.41 million) to the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, to be given over a four-year period for restoration and expansion ofits library, which will be renamed for him.

''John knows we have really needed a library,'' said Lori Blount, a spokesman for the prestigious school in Greenwich Village. ''The one we have is inadequate, so we're very thrilled.'' McEnroe has been intrigued by the art world for several years and worked as a volunteer for six months last year at the Salander-O'Reilly Gallery in Manhattan, learning the art dealership trade.

Painter Graham Nickson, dean of the New York Studio School, is represented by Salander-O'Reilly, hence the link to McEnroe.

, who recently opened his own by-appointment gallery.
