On-court deficit defeats Sir Hamish
IT'S not often that Hong Kong's Financial Secretary has to deal with a net loss.
But that's what happened to Sir Hamish Macleod yesterday at Victoria Park when the tennis court net and a surplus of errors contrived a loss for him and his partner Colin Sankey, the deputy head of the Government's Efficiency Unit, in the annual Corporate Patron League tournament.
The pair, representing The Victorian team, were beaten 6-2 by police duo Tarun Sawney and Man Kwok-fai in the single-set final of the Cup which is the tournament's second-tier event.
But it was all in the name of fun for Sir Hamish, who recently took over from former chief secretary Sir David Ford as president of the fund-raising Hong Kong Tennis Foundation.
''I play tennis every week,'' he said.
''I was not exactly the star of the show, but these are basically friendly matches . . .
''It's a lovely game, tennis.'' The tournament, designed for the corporate patrons who support tennis in the territory, featured some of Hong Kong's top businessmen and government officials.
The participants included millionaire Henry Fok Ying-tung, former legislative councillor Hu Fa-kuang and the Secretary for Transport Haider Barma.
About 30 companies took part in the tournament.
Money raised by the event will be donated to the Hong Kong Tennis Association's junior development fund.
