Toscana comes up trumps for restaurant
WE thought it only proper that we allow a decent interval for the Italians to decide who would be their umpteenth prime minister before we again raised the subject of the Ritz-Carlton's pasta (of the superior quality, of course) restaurant.
But now that Italy - which must be the most democratic country in the world since, given time, everybody has a chance of being PM - has made up its mind, we can return to the Tuscano? Tuscana? Toscano? or Toscana? debate.
More than 100 readers who, judging by the tone of the responses, are students of the Italian language, wrote in with their scholarly explanations, all in the hope of landing a free meal at the restaurant.
Ritz-Carlton GM Mike Matthews was in a quandary since the respondents were deadlocked between Toscana and Toscano.
However, after much deliberation over copious amounts of Chianti, Toscana was agreed as the future name.
Said Matthews: ''With so many replies it was not feasible to give away a dinner to everyone, and a draw would not have adequately rewarded everyone for their efforts.
''So all those who took the trouble to write will be receiving a $250 voucher towards a meal at Toscana''.
Meanwhile, back to the Italian classes.
