WITH the BBC replaced by Mandarin movies, the substantially Mandarin Channel V taking over from MTV, and Prime Sports commentaries now mainly in Mandarin, there is now little on the STAR Network to interest the majority in Hong Kong who do not speak Mandarin/Putonghua - apart from a few reruns of American sit-coms and soaps on STAR Plus. A spokesman for STAR recently pointed out that the English commentary was still available on Prime Sports by re-tuning the sub-carrier on the satellite dish.
Unfortunately few of us have our own individual dishes, so this requires an agreement between all the owners/residents of a particular apartment block to decide whether to tune to the Mandarin or English carrier.
I note however that the STAR soundtrack is also available on FM radio (Prime Sports being 105.1 MHz), so would it not be far easier for STAR to transmit the English soundtrack on FM for Hong Kong viewers who require it, while leaving the main satellite broadcast, which is aimed at the far larger markets in China/Taiwan/Malaysia, in Chinese?
