Response to report on raid

A DRAFT response to the report on the controversial Whitehead detention centre raid inquiry will be completed by the Secretary for Security, Alistair Asprey, today.

The draft will be submitted to Governor Chris Patten for final changes and released publicly with the keenly awaited report tomorrow.

The report was delivered to the Governor on Friday and was the result of two months work by Justices of the Peace Andrew Li Kwok-nang and Professor David Todd. The inquiry was ordered by Mr Patten after almost 200 Vietnamese inmates at Whitehead sought medical treatment following a raid on their compound by 1,250 officers in riot gear.

Hundreds of rounds of tear-gas were fired in the raid.
