Officials told to surrender luxury cars

SENIOR government officials and party cadres in Guangzhou would have to abandon their luxury imported cars in the city's latest crackdown on corruption, said the official Nanfang Daily.

New regulations issued stipulate that all officials should give up their Rolls-Royces, BMWs, Lexuses, Lincolns and other expensive imports and change to domestically manufactured cars by Monday, according to the report.

The posh wheels would instead be reserved for visiting celebrities, the new regulations said.

It was, however, understood that the restriction would not apply to imports priced less than 500,000 yuan (HK$446,000), as the report said the new orders were not meant to increase the financial burden of the Government.

The orders also stated that officials could only buy sedans made by Guangzhou's Peugeot - a joint venture between the city authorities and the French producer - when they replace their existing cars.

New requirements also include the prohibition of using special car licences by high-ranking officials, except the city's police chief.

Instead, cadres should change the car licences to civilian ones by the end of this month.
