Lucky draw reinforces sultan's winning ways

DURING the gala dinner given by Peter and Bessie Woo to mark the opening of the new store, gracious hostess Bessie was engaged in animated conversation with the Sultan of Johor, who recently completed his term as the king of Malaysia.

At one stage she swapped places with Peter to sit next to the sultan. The two of them laughed and joked, and the sultan even led her handsomely across the dance floor in a waltz or two.

Then it was time for Bessie to go to the front of the stage to make the lucky draw for the grand prize.

With her eyes shut she stirred the folded bits of paper inside the silver receptacle vigorously before drawing a name.

Guess what? It was His Royal Highness the Sultan of Johor.

''I smell something fishy,'' muttered the sultan in mock disbelief as he walked past Keeping Posted. And he kept repeating the line all the way back to his seat after picking up his prize, which was concealed in a large box.

Bessie followed in his wake, pleading in mitigatory mime that her eyes were closed and she had dug deep into the bowl to produce the winner's name.

But it was no use!
