Studying British culture

IF you have been dreaming of spending months in a foreign country experiencing a different lifestyle and culture - without having to worry about financial support - here is a chance now to make your dream come true.

Two young girls aged between 20 and 25, who can speak fluent English and have experience in volunteer or community service, will be chosen to work as volunteers at Padworth International College in Reading, Britain, from mid-September to June 1995, under the Hong Kong-United Kingdom Youth Exchange Scheme.

Co-organised by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and the GAP Activity Projects (GAP) Limited (Britain), the scheme is aimed at offering students a chance to sample a different culture.

The young volunteers, who will be assisting teachers with school activities, will also attend classes and will be offered free accommodation and food at the campus. As well as that, they will also receive GBP30 (about HK$354) per week as pocket money.

Successful candidates will receive training prior to their departure.

''It is going to be an experience because besides studying overseas, the youngsters will also have an opportunity to work and arrange campus activities,'' said Youth Exchange Officer Vivian Lau Man.

''It was designed as a two-way programme when we launched the programme in 1992. We receive two batches of British students each year and now hope to work out a reciprocal arrangement for Hong Kong students.

''But we have had a great deal of difficulty in finding suitable organisations in Britain who are willing to help with the finances,'' she said.

Applicants have to submit a 350-word essay in English on the topic ''Hong Kong in the Midst of the World'' together with the application form, copies of educational qualifications, history of employment, community or voluntary service certification and valid travel documents.

Deadline for application is July 7 and the registration fee for successful candidates is $4,000. For enquiries call Miss Lau on 561-6149.
