FASCINATED as we are here on Keeping Posted with life below stairs, the occasional newsletter from Ivor Spenser's famed school for butlers in England is eagerly awaited.

As we have reported from time to time, a handful of Spenser-trained butlers are scattered about the territory. And, indeed, the latest of the newsletters to peel off our fax machine refers to one of them.

Described only as a butler who ''works for his Hong Kong Chinese boss in Hong Kong and China'' the butler goes on to say that his own life is made very easy because of the number of staff he is able to employ in both places.

The newsletter also contains details of a butler left US$350,000 (HK$2.7 million) in the will of his boss. A loyal and devoted servant to the end, he has just married his master's 26-year-old widow.

We tell you, it's another world down there.
