Wong booster for Hiroshima

COMMONWEALTH foil champion Wong Tsan returned from the territory's most successful foray in international competition in Whistler, Canada and proclaimed: ''We can go forth and win medals at the Asian Games.'' Wong belied his sixth seeding by defeating top fencers from Australia, Canada and England in the individual foil tournament to become the first Hong Kong Commonwealth champion since the territory first competed at the tournament way back in 1950 when they were part of the Empire Games, now known as the Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth Championships for fencing became a separate tournament from the Commonwealth Games after 1970.

Wong's triumph in the ski resort of Whistler (1,800 metres above sea level) has boosted the territory's confidence for Hiroshima in October.

''It was a great achievement for us to win medals because conditions were tough and the odds were stacked against us from the beginning,'' said Wong, who also became the last Hong Kong Commonwealth champion as the territory will not be eligible for the next championships in Malaysia in 1998.
