A BADLY decomposed headless body of a man was found under the body of a woman floating in the water near the Ariea Preta district, Macau police said.

Officers later recovered the skull of the man about 20 metres away.

Judiciary police believe the two bodies had been washed to the enclave from the Zhuhai Special Economic Zone. No identification papers were found on either body and officers suspect both could be mainland residents.

Police believe currents could have washed both bodies to the enclave, and the man's corpse had not been discovered for some time.

The woman, aged about 30, was believed to have died two or three days ago.

Police were unable to establish the man's age.
