IMPREGILO of Italy, Zueblin of Germany and Dumez SA of France were awarded contracts worth 7.3 billion yuan (about HK$6.4 billion) for a dam project on the Yellow River, Xinhua (the New China News Agency) has reported.

It said three contracts for the Xiaolangdi water control project were signed on Saturday.

The three contracts for the main body, the flood-discharge structure and hydroelectric structure were awarded to the Yellow River joint venture, a joint venture made up of the three European firms and the Xiaolangdi joint venture.

The contractors were doing preparation work at the dam site, about 40 kilometres north of Luoyang city.

China plans to borrow a total of about US$1 billion from the World Bank for the project, the second largest in China after the Three Gorges dam.
