A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl fell to her death yesterday after her mother left their Shamshuipo home to take her brother to school.

When the woman returned to the 11th floor flat in the Manor Centre, Un Chau Street, 10 minutes later, Chow Pui-shan was missing.

The girl's body was found shortly afterwards on the first-floor podium.

Pui-shan's mother, 35, had left home at about 8.45 am after asking whether the girl wanted to accompany her to her older brother's school.

When Pui-shan said ''no'', her mother switched the television on and left.

Police believe the girl lost her balance and fell while standing on a small chair looking out of the sitting-room window.

The window grille was usually locked, but her mother had apparently forgotten to lock it and to remove the chair after taking in the washing.

Social workers said the tragedy highlighted the need for greater education among parents about the risks of leaving children alone at home.
