Ants group can join coalition

MEMBERS of the United Ants, accused of trying to discredit the pro-democracy forces, will be allowed to join the Democratic Party - the proposed liberal coalition.

The joint organising body of the new party said last night that members could join without resigning from the United Ants, because it was considered a pressure group rather than a political group.

The organising committee listed about 20 groups whose members would have to resign if they wanted to join the Democratic Party, which will be formed in October when the United Democrats and Meeting Point merge. They included the Association for Democracy and People's Livelihood, and the 123 Democratic Alliance.

The United Ants are campaigning against Meeting Point because it abstained in last month's vote on whether there should be a fully directly elected legislature next year.
