WORK on the construction of the Ting Kau Bridge - a crucial element in the Route 3 highway linking Tsing Yi and the New Territories - will begin this month.

The Government announced yesterday that a $1.738 billion contract had been awarded to a consortium of companies and that work was due for completion by mid-1997.

Aimed at relieving congestion in the Kwai Tsing-Tsuen Wan area, some of the world's top firms were competing for the valuable contract.

The winning contractor, who will also be responsible for work on the approach viaduct section of Route 3, comprises a partnership between Downer and Company (Hong Kong), Cubiertas y Mzov (Spain), Entrecanales y Tavora (Spain) and Ed Zublin (Germany).

The project is expected to provide easy access from the northwestern New Territories to the Kowloon Peninsula, the proposed port developments on Lantau and the new airport at Chek Lap Kok.
