Nomads on march again with comfortable first-day victory

DEFENDING champions Nomads got their Saturday League campaign off to a good start when they scored a convincing seven-wicket win over Islanders at So Kon Po yesterday.

David Clifton-James played a dual role, taking two wickets and then scoring 35 runs, as Nomads kick-started their title-defence.

Lal Jayasinghe battled bravely for the Islanders, scoring almost half his side's runs. But the 50 from Jayasinghe was not enough as the Islanders were bowled out for 103. Nomads knocked off the required runs in just 20 overs with Steve Foster top-scoring with 40.

A waterlogged pitch at Sandy Bay saw the Witherers v Hong Kong University game called off while Ramblers received a bye yesterday.

Craigengower Cricket Club, celebrating their 100th year anniversary, had no cause for bringing out the champagne yesterday when they were crushed by Kai Tak at Stanley Fort.

Batting first, Kai Tak compiled scored 213 for five wickets off their 35 overs with Nigel Sawney-Cookson hitting 88. In reply, CCC were bowled out for 84 with Tim Smart and Peter Riddel taking four wickets each.

Saracens swept to a convincing 10-wicket win over DBS. batting first, DBS were dismissed for a paltry 79. Hong Kong's ICC Trophy representative Paul Cresswell took two wickets as did Anthony Correa, while M. Lever grabbed three. Saracens' openers Correa (41) and Balu Shroff (20) knocked off the required runs by the 16th over.

At KGV, Merchants Cricket Club defeated their hosts KGV by six wickets. KGV scored 144 for six with N. Francis top-scoring with 42. Papu Butani was amongst the wickets taking three for 28. A well compiled 49 by Thrupty Nimkar was the cornerstone of the Merchants' replay as they sped to 148 for four in the 25th over.

Little Sai Wan, Crusaders and St Georges also emerged victorious yesterday.

A dozen teams have entered the CCC Centenary Invitation Six-a-side tournament today at Kowloon Cricket Club.

The tournament will provide a crucial opportunity for the 12-man Hong Kong squad, who are currently in training for October's prestigious Hong Kong Sixes, to test their progress.

Play will commence at 9.30 am with the final scheduled for 5 pm.

Draw: KCC I v IRC, Kai Tak v HKCC II, KCC II v Islanders, British Forces v St. Georges, LSW v Vagabonds, CCC v HKCC I.
