CHINESE Premier Li Peng will deliver the keynote address to open the Pacific Rim Forum, to be held in Beijing for the first time from October 25 to 28.

Other prominent Chinese officials participating will be Vice-Premier Li Lanqing and Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation Wu Yi.

Alan Carroll of Australia, chairman of the Pacific Rim Forum, said the meeting would provide an opportunity for Chinese leaders to raise their profile on trade issues.

China's bid to re-enter GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) was expected to be a hotly debated issue, he said.

He said Beijing was picked as the venue because China, along with Indonesia, were the two most important markets in Asia.
