Poly plans course promotion day promotion day

A COURSE promotion day will be held tomorrow at the Hong Kong Polytechnic to give Form Seven students the information they need before they submit their application forms for the next academic year.

Applications through the Joint University and Polytechnic Admissions System (JUPAS) are due on November 1. Students applying through the Joint Admission Scheme for Polytechnics, Technical Institutes and Colleges (JASPIC) should send their forms about February/March next year.

Ada Chan Mak Wai-chun, senior assistant academic secretary of the institute's Academic Secretariat, said the day would let students clarify any doubts they had before they made decisions.

'Academic staff will be present at the exhibition to answer students' questions concerning the course content,' Mrs Chan said.

'Senior students will help by sharing their experience with prospective applicants.' A seminar will be offered to career teachers to brief them on the course content. Admission procedures also will be introduced.

'Since career teachers may have to offer their advice to students on course selection, especially when they are interested in new courses, we feel it important to let the teachers know more about our new courses,' Mrs Chan said.

Special practical rooms and laboratories will be open for demonstrations during the day while displays of equipment will be arranged.

'It is expected prospective applicants will have a better understanding of what, practically, they will need to do when they study a particular course,' she said.

'The laboratories and equipment we have in tertiary institutes are not the same as in secondary schools.

'Students can acquire a clearer picture through these demonstrations.' New degree courses available at the Hong Kong Polytechnic in 1995/96 include Shipping Technology and Management, Prosthetics and Orthotics and Operations Management.

Four new high diploma courses will be offered next year; Colouration and Fishing, Fashion and Clothing, Fashion and Textile Merchandising and Textile Processing.

Course information will be displayed at the Polytechnic campus' podium from 10 am until 1 pm and from 2 pm until 4.30 pm.

The seminar for career teachers will be held in Lecture Theatre TU107 at 10 am.
