HONG KONG horse trainer Wong Tang-ping went into the history books yesterday when he became the first local trainer to send out five winners since the sport turned professional 24 years ago.

The only other time a trainer has chalked up five wins at a single meeting was some 14 years ago, also at Sha Tin, when trainer Bob Burns achieved the feat, with a helping hand from jockey Peter Miers, who rode the horses.

Mr Wong's five-timer came on the inaugural Ladies' Day meeting at Sha Tin when American Julie Krone - the most prolific woman jockey in the world - was to be the star attraction.

Krone was not to be outdone, however, and rode two winners - both for Mr Wong - in the second and third races.

Mr Wong's winners - for a 2,832-1 accumulator - came from Northern Fire Ball in the second, Polar Star in the third, Miss Piggy in the feature event, the Ladies' Purse, Top Performance in the sixth and Star Of Marble in the eighth.

There is a chance that Krone will return to Hong Kong, possibly on a one-month visitor's licence.

Ladies' Day - which yesterday attracted a record Saturday crowd of 56,860 - is likely to be repeated on a larger scale next season, with other women jockeys joining Krone.
