Threat to terminal project

CONSTRUCTION of Container Terminal 10 could be delayed if fishermen in the area were not compensated satisfactorily, the Democratic Party warned yesterday.

The party said it would vote against a proposal in Legco's Finance Committee to reclaim To Kau Wan, north of Lantau, for CT10 if not enough money was paid.

Civil Engineering Department director Edward Brand said any such vote could delay construction.

The reclamation should go ahead as quickly as possible to free more land for the terminal project.

An environmental impact assessment revealed the reclamation would have limited impact on surrounding waters, he said.

Fishermen dispute the claim and say the land acquisition would severely reduce the fishing grounds.
