All eyes on Cup battle

HONG KONG is the focus of the international yachting scene for the next week as a fleet of world-class craft contest the Corum Cup Series in the waters off Clearwater Bay.

The series opens today with the Steinlager Ocean Triangle and continues through until Friday when racing culminates in a 160 nautical-mile overnight offshore race.

Overseas entries from Australia, New Zealand, France and South Africa have added spice to an already competitive fleet of Hong Kong-based boats.

The performances of the three visiting Mumm 36s - Boogie Flash, Georgia Express and Corum No Problem - will be closely watched by local sailors.

The Mumm 36 class of boats will be used in next year's Admiral's Cup.

Also on parade today will be Hong Kong businessman Karl Kwok's new ILC40, Beau Geste, which comes to the territory with two class wins at regattas in the United States before shipment.
