No pay for Iron Lady

YOUR October 23 article, 'Cracks in the Iron Lady' (Sunday Morning Post, October 23), wrongly stated Lady Thatcher 'gave a speech to the Asia Society for a fee of $600,000 - money she donated back to the organisation and the Heep Hong Society for Handicapped Children'.

At no time did Lady Thatcher request nor did the Asia Society offer a fee for her speech. From the outset, she made it clear she would donate her time and services on behalf of the Asia Society and the Heep Hong Society.

The supposed payment and subsequent donation of a fee are a figment of someone's imagination.

As a result of Lady Thatcher's generosity, the dinner raised more than $1.2 million, which will be divided equally between the Asia Society-Hong Kong Centre and the Heep Hong Society for Handicapped Children.

As a final note, the Asia Society as a matter of policy does not pay speakers' fees to prominent individuals. BURTON LEVIN Director Asia Society of Hong Kong
