$20 toll charge to stay

THERE was no plan to reduce the monthly administrative charge of $20 for the autotoll system because the company was still in the red, said Secretary for Transport Haider Barma.

He said the Autopass Company, responsible for installation, operation and maintenance of the system, had invested more than $20 million in the autotoll system.

It was still operating at a loss and was 'far from reaching break-even point', Mr Barma quoted the company as saying.

The number of vehicles using the system has doubled in the year. By the end of last month, 47,060 vehicle tags had been issued, compared with 23,790 tags as at the end of last year.

The autotoll system was introduced at the Cross Harbour Tunnel and the Aberdeen Tunnel on August last year, and at the Lion Rock Tunnel in August this year.

Mr Barma said the present arrangements were satisfactory and few complaints had been received.
