Never Let Me Go (Film)
Set in the not so sci-fi world of rural Britain, Never Let Me Go explores the scary possibility of a world inhabited by clones.
Kathy H (Carey Mulligan) recalls her time with friends Tommy (Andrew Garfield) and Ruth (Keira Knightley) at the Hailsham boarding school. All the students were brought up believing they are 'special', each with an ultimate destiny to fulfil.
The film is adapted from the novel of the same name, a wonderfully crafted story by Kazuo Ishiguro. The book is considered one of the 100 best modern novels by Time magazine. And the story is brilliant. Not to take anything away from the fine cast, but the film doesn't really bring another dimension to the story. It's just Ishiguro's masterpiece presented in a different medium.
If you can get through the slow first act, you'll be rewarded for your patience.
The idea of finding a clone's 'original' is fascinating, but is only skimmed over in the film. It would have been interesting to further explore that dimension.
As a viewer it's difficult to accept the tragic fate of the characters. You and the characters both know what's in store. It's just ironic that they're better at accepting it than we are.
